MS Expedition ran aground in Norway

MS Expedition   The cruise ship MS Expedition, which has 100 passengers and 57 crew members on board ran aground near Isispynten, Norway. The ship got water ingress and serious damages of the hull, but the accurate and fast salvage operations saved it from sinking. The intentions of the captain was to head the ship to Alesung, but when the hole was found and the inspection was help, the ship was reported as unavailable for operations. The vessel Expedition was tugged to Longyearbyen in the Advents Fjord, where was anchored for further maintenance and inspections. There is no pollution and injured people during the accident, but the construction of the hull is damaged and the ship will need of repair and even might be dry docked. The reason for the accident is still unknown, but usually cruise ship Expedition is operating in coastal water and most probably this was the reason for hitting the rocky shallow.

   The cruise ship MS Expedition (IMO: 7211074) was built in the Danish shipyard Helsingör Skibs & Maskinbygg in 1972. The ship deadweight of 925 DWT and gross tonnage of 3,960 GRT. The length of the cruise ship Expedition is 104.04 m, the beam is 18.93 m and the draft is 4.37 m. The vessel has 6 passenger decks and capacity for 1,200 passengers. The cruise ship MS Expedition has ice class 1 B, which allows it to operate in northern waters. The vessel has strong hull and engineering, as the main engines are two MAN B&W 10U45HU, which have total power of 10,850 hp.
