River passenger ship inflamed in Rhine River

The accident happened near Krefeld, Germany when the ship had 154 passengers and 34 crew members on board. The passenger ship Gerard Schmitter was menuvering for berthing at Krefeld, when started a fire in the engine room, caused from malfunction in electrical system. Strong acid smoke gassed the ship and the vicinity, making all people on board to evacuate. The fire brigade from the shore, arrived at the scene of the accident and extinguished the fire. Two people have slight injuries and were taken to the hospital.

   The passengers were taken to hotel close to the ship, as there were sufficient damages in the engine room and hull. The repair of the ship will take a 1 day and the ship will continue Gerard Schmitter the voyage to Strasbourg. The local authorities started investigation of the accident, which will cost to the ship operator about 50,000 EUR.
