Passenger ship with 162 students on board ran aground in Japan

   The trip cruise ship Ginga ran aground off Yamaguchi Prefecture in Japan. On board of the vessel were 162 high school students and teachers, who were on cruise trip around the coast. Due to navigation mistake and hit by the current, the cruise ship ran aground on rocky shoals on 1 nautical mile off Suo-Oshima Town shores. The duty officers on board of the ship Ginga sent a distress signal and the coast guard sent immediately several rescue boats at the scene of the accident. All the passengers and crew members were rescued without any serious injuries. The local authorities and coast guard started salvage operations to tug the vessel and refloat it, but the hull is broken and there is water ingress.

Passenger catamaran Baranof Winds with 72 passengers struck rocks in Alaska

   The passenger ship Baranof Winds struck rocks in Glacier Bay with 72 passengers on board. The sightseeing vessel got water ingress and was in danger of sinking, so the navigation officers sent immediately distress signal and requested assistance from coast guard and nearby vessels. On the scene of the accident arrived the Holland America cruise ship Volendam, which took 70 passengers from the sinking ship. Another two persons were boarded on National Park Service boat. Some the passengers were with minor injuries, but there is no problem for their health. The coast guard send a helicopter with de-watering pump, which was started on board of Baranof Winds. The crew and the coast guard rescuers operated the ship to stay afloat and deployed the anchor to keep the stability of the ship. Passenger ship ran aground in Elbe River

   The passenger ship Altona ran aground in Elbe River near Hamburg, due to the the low tide and navigation error of the duty officer on board. The passenger ship was operating on regular route from Blankenese to Neuenfelde, when the ship hit mud bank and stand in position without availability to refloat. During the accident there are no serious damages of the hull, as the crew reported that there is no water ingress. However the ship Altona stayed during the whole day agrounded. On board of the ship there were 30 passengers, who stayed on board and spent about 1 day in such position before being refloated and tugged to the HADAG-pier, where was berthed for inspection and repair. The port authorities are investigation the reason of the accident, but the shipowner will have to pay all the expenses for refloating and salvage operations of the ship.

Old wooden ship with 27 people on board sank in Indonesia

   The ship Putri Ayu sank in Maluku Province, Indonesia. The ship is is quite old, with wooden hull and purpose for carrying passengers and cargoes between the provinces of Indonesia. The ship left Slamet Riyadi, loaded with building materials and 22 passengers and 5 crew members on board. The ship's master negligeed the warning for heavy sea, strong wind and high waves. Three hours after leaving the port of Slamet Riyadi, the ship was hit by several waves, some of which were over 5 meters in hight, which damaged the hull and flooded the holds and engine rooms. The water in the engine room caused blackout and the drifting vessel was devoted to the sea power. Only for a few minutes the ship's hull was seriously damaged the ship sank, leaving all the passengers, crew and cargo into the water. River passenger ship inflamed in Rhine River

   The river passenger ship Gerard Schmitter inflamed during voyage on the Rhine River. The accident happened near Krefeld, Germany when the ship had 154 passengers and 34 crew members on board. The passenger ship Gerard Schmitter was menuvering for berthing at Krefeld, when started a fire in the engine room, caused from malfunction in electrical system. Strong acid smoke gassed the ship and the vicinity, making all people on board to evacuate. The fire brigade from the shore, arrived at the scene of the accident and extinguished the fire. Two people have slight injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Passenger ship sank in Philippines

   The old wooden passenger ship Josille II with 59 people on board sank off Pagawanin Island, Philippines. The ship was sailing in bad weather and heavy sea, when a storm was approaching from the southwest and made the situation even worse. The passengers ship Josille II ignored the warnings from the coast guest and meteo-journals and passed through the dangerous area. The large waves and heavy wind broke the hull of the ship and caused large heel and the ship's stability was highly reduced. The ship sank very fast and all the people gone on water. The rescue boats and nearby sailing ships arrived quickly to the position of the accident and 54 people were saved with minor injuries. However, the bodies of 5 people were taken from the water later dead.
