Navy reveals powerful ship mounted laser weapon

U.S. Navy The Laser Weapon System (Laws) temporarily installed aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Dewey. The U.S. Navy announced Monday that it is preparing to deploy a new weapon that can disable a hostile boat and even destroy a surveillance drone overhead — all without dispensing any expensive ammunition. Ship-Drawed teen makes waves with drawings of Vessels

When the credits rolled at the end of 195-minute screen epic Titanic, common audience reactions ranged from, ‘Wasn’t it romantic?’ to, ‘Cor, I really need the loo’.But all Harry Cotterill could talk about after seeing it as a seven-year-old was the doomed but magnificent ocean liner herself. It began a passion which inspired him to start drawing ships. Now, at 18, he is celebrating sketching his 50th vessel. Harry, of Colchester, Essex, spends up to 20 hours over three days making his incredibly detailed drawings. (more…)

Navy names ship after 9-11 victims

A Navy ship named in honor of the victims and first responders of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon joined the fleet Saturday, serving as a floating tribute to the people who died that day and an active warship that can transport Marines around the world. The Navy commissioned the USS Arlington in front of about 5,000 people in its new home port of Naval Station Norfolk. The amphibious transport dock is one of three ships named after 9/11 crash sites. Fatigue identified in fishing vessel sinking

The State's investigation into the sinking of the fishing vessel Tit Bonhomme last year with the loss of five lives has found crew fatigue to have been the "single overriding causal factor". The Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) report has been unable to establish who was on watch when the vessel ran aground on Adam's island at the mouth of Glandore harbor in the early hours of January 15th, 2012. However, examination of the hull by Naval Service and Garda diving teams established that the 21-meter vessel was on autopilot and the engine in gear with a course set for Adam's island, and there was no "off course" alarm system. Suspecious Vessel off Mumbai coast

MUMBAI: A dhow suspected to be involved in smuggling activities was seized off Hay Bunder in south Mumbai on Thursday morning, hours after a coast guard vessel intercepted the signals of a banned satellite phone from the vessel 15km off the coast. The five-member crew of MSV Yusufi, which is registered in Gujarat, reportedly threw the phone into the water when they were cornered by the coast guard and navy. (more…)

For shipbuilders such as STX Group, China was once a goldmine. Now it’s a graveyard. China’s lower appetite for commodities undermined the group’s plan to sell its shipping line, wiping out a combined $435 million of investor wealth at the South Korea-based conglomerate’s three main companies this week. Worker missing after disabled cruise ship breaks from mooring

U.S. Coast Guard officials are searching for a missing shipyard worker after a disabled Carnival Cruise ship broke free from its mooring in Mobile, Ala. Petty Ofc. Second Class Bill Colclough says a crew is searching the Mobile River for the man. He went missing after the ship drifted from its mooring Wednesday afternoon. Colclough was unsure of where the worker was when the ship became dislodged. (more…)

Navy moves ship off coast of Korean Peninsul

The U.S. military has moved a Navy ship capable of intercepting missiles to waters off the coast of the Korean Peninsula, as threats from North Korea's Kim Jong Un escalate and the White House signals it wants to head off any potential conflict by flexing America's military might. A U.S. defense official confirmed to Fox News that the Navy had moved the U.S. destroyer to a location near South Korea. The ship, the USS McCain, is equipped with the Aegis defense system and is capable of shooting down missiles. Officials initially misidentified the ship but later clarified the USS McCain had been dispatched. (more…)

Titanic Director Donates Deep-Sea Craft to Institute

The Hollywood director James Cameron is donating the craft that he built and last year rode into the sea’s deepest spot to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, as part of a new collaboration meant to speed ocean exploration, the partners announced early Tuesday.

The undersea craft, which cost Mr. Cameron, the maker of hit movies like “Titanic” and “Avatar,” roughly $10 million of his own money, will be used mainly to aid the design of advanced vehicles and technologies, rather than for routinely carrying scientists into the sea’s depths. (more…)
