The maritime transport felt serious problems during the financial crisis, as the value of cargoes transported around the world is decreasing with every quarter. However, in spite of the financial crisis the companies are investing a lot of money in new vessels, which are more modern, more economy and more profitable. The Capesize bulk carrier Ocean Comet is one of the modern ships, which was built last years. The vessel was completed in March 2008 in Imabari Shipyard by the famous Asian shipbuilder Namura Shipbuilding Co Ltd. The ship Ocean Comet has deadweight of 176,943 DWT and gross tonnage of 89,603 GRT. The ship is large, with improved cargo holds and strong engineering. The overall length of Ocean Comet is 288.97 meters, while the length between perpendiculars is 279.00 meters. The beam of the vessel is 45.00 meters, the depth is 24.40 meters and the maximum summer draft is 17.93 meters. Such large size and modern design are giving large cargo capacity for the vessel.
Together with the hull design, the ship is in need of strong and reliable engine, which will give high power to the propulsion system and propeller. The main engine, which was installed to Ocean Comet is MAN B&W 6S70MC Mark VI, with total output power of 22,600 hp at 91 rpm. The N-PAI NHV type propeller increase the power and decreases the water resistance and turbulence. This highly increase the power of the ship and the stowage of the engine. The service speed of the cargo ship is 15.2 knots, which is too high for bulk carrier, but the developers calculated that they can increase the speed with decreasing the fuel consumption with some improvements in the propulsion system and hull design.
The vessel has nine cargo holds on board, which have large capacity and make the ship proper for heavy bulk cargoes and grain. The universal design of the vessel are decreasing the time of loading and discharging and also make the shipowner more flexible in operation. The holds design is with crossed angles, which makes discharging easier and also provide place for the ballast tanks, without losing cargo space. Definitely the ship Ocean Comet is made to be profitable and very flexible in operations all around the world.
