General Cargo ship and tug collided in Volga River

Sv Georgiy Pobedonosets ship   The Russian general cargo ship Sv. Georgiy Pobedonosets loaded with steel hit a tug OT-2117 in Volga River. The cargo ship lost control due to failure in the steering gear and without any control struck a tug, which was pushing 4 barges. The accident happened near Samara on the 1743 kilometer mark on Volga River. After the collision the tug got hole in the engine room portside and was grounded by the crew to avoid sinking. The engine room of the tug flooded by water ingress, but fortunately there were no injured crew members. The repair of the tug should be done uderwater as the investigations of the incident will be done by the local authorities. The cargo ship Sv. Georgiy Pobedonosets got no damages and underway reached the Samara port, where will be arrested for investigation.

   The cargo ship Sv. Georgiy Pobedonosets (IMO: 9247637) has length of 128.00 meters, beam of 17.00 meters and draft of 4.50 meters. The ship has deadweight of 5,440 DWT and gross tonnage of 4,974 GRT. The ship is operating under the flag of Russia, but managed and owned by the company Inok – Antwerp, Belgium. The cargo ship was built in 2003 in the shipyard of Severnaya Verf in St. Petersburg, Russia.
