Hong Kong ferry accident leaves 85 injured

Eighty five people were injured on Friday when a high-speed ferry travelling from Hong Kong to Macau hit an unidentified object in the water, authorities said. The crash, which took place on a popular tourist route, comes at a time of heightened public concern over the safety of maritime transport in Hong Kong's harbour, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Ferry hit pier in Lower Manhattan injuring 17 passengers

   Ferry hit a dock in Lower Manhattan, which caused injury of at least 17 passengers. The ship was operated by Seastreak Ferries and had about 300 passengers on board. The ship was operating on regular router from New Jersey to Lower Manhattan, while during a berth to Pier 11 at South Street and Gouverneur Lane the ship hit the pier and throw passengers from their seats. The ship has serious damages over the hull, as the whole starboard side is broken over the waterline without water ingress. The reason for the accident was high speed of maneuvering and too aggressive berthing operation by the pilot. All of the injured people were transported to the local hospital and later were let to go home.

Passenger ship Lamma IV sank in Hong Kong

   The passenger ship Lamma IV sank after collision with Hong Kong ferry in East Lamma Channel, Hong Kong. The coastal passenger ship was on drift for watching the National Day fireworks in Victoria Harbour, while the ship was hit by the ferry operating in the channel. The ferry was forced to maneuver in case to prevent collision with a cargo vessel, but was not able to escape from the accident with the passenger ship Lamma IV. The daily cruiser sank by stern with more than 120 passengers and 3 crew members on board. The local authorities reported that 36 people were dead in spite of the fast and accurate rescue operations. The water trap killed 28 passengers from the passenger ship, while 8 other died in the hospital later. The ferry has almost no damages and a few passengers were slightly injured after the accident.

Ferry sank after collision with the LPG tanker Norgas Cathinka

   The ferry Bahuga Jaya sank after collision with LPG tanker Norgas Cathinka in the Sunda Strait off Jakarta, Indonesia. The accident happened on 4 nautical miles off the Bakauheni Port, Lampung Selatan and on board of the passenger ship there were more than 200 passengers and 30 crew members. The local authorities reported that at least 8 people died in the water of Indonesia and 15 people are still missing. The accident happened after violating the Colreg rules of the both vessels, which turned to same position to avoid collision. The LPG tanker Norgas Cathinka is detained by the Indonesian coast guard, after the accident, before clearing of the situation. The local authorities and the coast guard organized search and rescue operations, engaging a helicopter and three rescue boats. The investigation of the accident is still in process and all the aspects of the collision will be reviewed by the authorities and police.

Ferry Sykkylvsfjord collided with pier in Norway

   The ferry Sykkylvsfjord collided into a pier in Stranda, Norway during maneuvering into the port. The vessel was on route from Liabygda to Stranda and has maneuvers for berthing into the pier, but because of the high speed allided with the pier and made sufficient damages of the harbor. After the collision the ferry god damages in the hull and the front ramp. According to the master evidences the accident was caused by the malfunction in the propeller and highly disturbed ability to maneuver in the port. The ferry Sykkylvsfjord got serious damages, which caused docking of the ship for repair and full inspections before backing to service. The port authorities investigated the accident and most probably will fine the vessel for the crashed pier. There are no injured people during the accident and no damaged cars, but only the bow ramp was able to open for discharging the cars from the vessel.

Ferry Basto IV got engine failure and calceled recent voyages

   The ferry Basto IV got engine failure and discarded all the voyages planned for today. The ship had technical malfunction in the engine, which caused the interruption of the service. The ferry is operating on regular routes between Moss and Horten in Norway crossing Oslofjord four time per day. The ship got technical problems, when preparing to leave the port of Horten, without any passengers on board and before starting the voyage. The ferry Basto IV is quite old ship, built in 1986, but regularly maintained and in very good condition, which ensures safety operations in North Sea.

Ferry with 561 passengers got engine failure in Philippines

   The ferry St Thomas of Aquinas got engine failure and full blackout on route between Manila and Iloilo City in Philippines. The ferry got serious problem in the propulsion system and main engine, which caused power down and the ship left drifting in Iloilo Strait. On board of the vessel there were 561 passengers, who were safety evacuated from the coast guard. The crew dropped anchor to prevent the ship from drifting in the heavy sea and large waves. The coast guard and the port authorities started making a plan for towing of the ship to the harbor, where the vessel will be repaired and maintained.

High speed ferry Provincetown III ran aground in Boston

   The catamaran ferry Provincetown III ran aground in the Marble Head, Boston. The ship was navigated and maneuvered by trainee skipper, who hit a sandbar into the harbor. The ferry was carrying 145 passengers on board and 4 crew members. There are no injured persons during the accident, but the hull of Provincetown III was seriously damaged by the ground. The passengers were transfered to another ferry of Bay State Cruise Co, which transported all of them to the destination point. The coast guard reacted immediately with re-floating of the vessel, as three tugs were sent to the scene of the accident. The re-floating is planned for the next high tide, which will support the salvage operations. After the vessel is re-floated it will be tugged to the dock for repair and inspection into the Boston harbor. The line of the ferry Provincetown III was suspended before the vessel is ready to operate in service again.

Ferry with 80 passengers ran aground in Bergen

   The ferry Trondheim with 80 passengers on board ran aground in the port of Bergen, Norway. The ship collided with Krokeide Quay and ran aground in the mud bank of the port during maneuvering for berthing. The rescue boats, and port authorities arrived at the scene of the accident, but they reported that there are no injured passengers and no damaged cars. The ferry Trondheim was operating on route between Hufthammar and Bergen, when during the maneuvering operations had technical problem and got blackour of the diesel generators. The vessel drifted with higher speed to the quay and the shallow, where ran aground. The divers are inspecting the hull of the ship but no serious damages and no holes were found. However, the ferry Trondheim will be dry docked in bergen for full recovery and maintenance.
