Explosion in beached tanker Union Brave killed 5 dock workers

   The beached tanker Union Brave got explosion and fire in the Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard, killing 5 dock workers. The accident happened during cutting of compartment in the rear part of the vessel, near the pump room. The fire works caused flaming of the fuel fumes and explosion in the compartment. Total 7 people were in the vicinity an 5 of them were killed, while 2 others were seriously injured. The tanker was sold for scrap to Ship Breaking Co, which ordered recycling in the Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard on plot 82. The local authorities and the yard started investigation of the accident and checked the safety level in the plot. The fuel tanks were not ventilated enough and the fuel fumes flamed by the welders used.

Crude carrier Hellespont Trooper was sold in Greece

   The large crude carrier Hellespont Trooper was sold to new Greek owners at the price of 12,000,000 USD. The contract was signed a few days ago and the delivery of the ship will be done till the end of the year. The ship was operated and owned by the German company Hellespont Hammonia, but because of the decreased numbers of contracts the company was forced to sell the ship. The new owners were not announced officially, as the ship will be delivered in the next months. The large crude carrier Hellespont Trooper was built in the shipyard of Samsung Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries in 1996 and has really good engineering, powerful propulsion system and large cargo spaces. The ship was in good condition during the sale and the hull had no damages.

Oil tanker Rainbow Quest was sold to Mercator Lines

   The crude oil tanker Rainbow Quest was sold to the Singapore company Mercator Lines at price of 11,500,000 USD. The cargo ship was previously owned by another Singapore company Anglo Eastern Shipmanagement, but due to financial crisis and fleet renew was forced to sell the vessel. The crude oil tanker Rainbow Quest is in good condition, without any damages and built according to the latest standards of IMO. The ship was operating on various routes all over the world, mostly in Europe and Asia, but also carried cargo in North and South America. The Singapore company Mercator Lines has plans to increase its fleet and capacity, because of the increased demand of crude oil in the country and the new contracts signed with government companies.

Crude carrier Kyeema Spirit ran aground in Estonia

   The crude oil tanker Kyeema Spirit ran aground on 8 nautical miles off Tallinn, Estonia with pilot on board. The vessel was not able to refloat by its own power and was waiting the salvage operations to be prepared and started. All the crew is on board of the ship, as Kyeema Spirit is hit by large waves with height of 2.30 m and strong winds with speed of 24 m/s. The crude oil tanker has hole in the double hull and leaked large amount of ballast water, as till now there is no pollution in the area. According to a preliminary information, the vessel was not steering correctly the course, as the pilot was not aware for the shallow near Estonian island Ulfso. However, the local authorities told that they warned the officers on board of Kyeema Spirit several times for approaching the rocky shallow. The salvage operations will not be performed before the divers inspect the hull and ensure about the strength of the tanks plates.

Cosco Shipping plans to order 10 new supertankers

   Cosco Tanker Shipping is planning to order 10 new supertankers at price of around 950,000,000 USD. The state-owned Chinese shipowner is in need of fleet capacities increase, amid the rising crude oil imports of the Asian country. The plan is still at early stage, but most probably the contract for the building of the new vessels will be signed in early 2013 and the deliveries will be expected in 2015-2016. The growth of the crude oil imports in China is incredible, because of the improved powers of the heavy production of the country. For the last five years the important in the Asian country grew with 66% and according to the specialists the demand will increase much more. The negotiations for building of the 10 new supertankers for the Cosco fleet are not started year, but in any case the company requested a few offers from several shipyards before making contract with anyone.

Sanko sold BM Bonanza to Ofer Group

   The large crude carrier BM Bonanza (IMO: 9337391) joined the fleet of Ofer Group yesterday, when Sanko and the Israeli holding signed contract for acquisition. The price of the deal was 25,000,000 USD and the ship will join to the fleet of the new owners next month. Israeli company Ofer Group is one of the largest shipowners in the country and the new vessel will expand its fleet in crude carrying and oil transport. The cargo ship BM Bonanza has deadweight of 105,614 DWT and gross tonnage of 56,172 GRT. The length of the vessel is 239.00 m, the beam is 42.00 m and the maximum draft is 8.20 m. The ship was built in 2007 by Sumitomo Heavy Industries in their shipyard in Yokosuka, Japan.

Knightsbridge Tankers Limited sold two Supertankers

   Knightsbridge Tankers Limited announced that the sale of two VLCC was completed and the vessel Hampstead and Titan Venus will be delivered to the new owners in the fourth quarter of 2012. The company has serious financial problems, because of the financial crisis and bad conditions in the maritime transport sector. The sale of the two crude carriers will stabilize the company will we save them from bankruptcy. The both ships have bareboat charter, which expires in the end of the year and after this will join to the new fleets. The prices of the deal was not announced, but the money will be used for investment in new smaller and more modern vessel, as part from the company’s intention to renew and grow its fleet. This is anly the first step from renovation of the Knightsbridge Tankers Limited's vessels,as the next wave of ships for sale will be in next three year, when are expiring the charters of the other supertankers.

Product tanker got steering gear failure in Flushing Road

   The product tanker Chance got failure in the steering gear during a voyage though Flushing Road. The ship was not able to maneuver and caused danger for collision with the vessels in vicinity. The problem with the steering gear was caused by technical malfunction of the rudder. The crew of the product tanker Chance dropped anchor near the waterway and asked for tug service. The tug arrived at the anchorage and towed the vessel to Vlissingen, where the ship was docked for full repair. The local authorities requested full survey and inspection of the product tanker, once it is repaired.

Sinokor bought three oil tankers from German shipowner

   The South Korean shipping company Sinokor Merchant Marine bought three sister ships - Cape Akrotiri, Cape Ancona and Cape Aspro. The three tankers were owned by the German company Columbia Shipmanagement Deutschland, which had serious debt problems and was forced to sell some assets to cover the bank loans. The price of the deal was not announced by according to experts it is about 48,000,000 USD. The three crude oil carriers were part from one order in South Korean shipyard Halla Engineering Samho in 1998 and has similar measures, size and capacity. Cape Akrotiri, Cape Ancona and Cape Aspro will be delivered to the new shipowner Sinokor Merchant Marine in the end of the year, when their time charter expires. All the ships are in good condition and operating under the flag of Cyprus. The shipowner Sinokor Merchant Marine is one of the leaders in container, tanker and general goods shipping in South Korea and whole East Asia.

Product tanker was hijacked in the Gulf of Guinea

   The product tanker Energy Centurion with 24 Russian crew members was hijacked in the Gulf of Guinea. The vessel was headed to Lome, Togo, when armed pirates attacked it and open fire to the tanker. All the crew was reported to be in good health, but the position of the vessel is unknown. The product tanker Energy Centurion was loaded with 50,000 tons of gasoil and most probably the vessel was attacked for cargo stealing. The pirates attacks in the Western Africa and the Gulf of Guinea became more frequent, as a few days ago another product tanker was hijacked and released after 5 days. Usually the pirates are interested only with cargo stealing and attack product tankers and chemical tankers in the region, as they have low free board and low speed. The navy presence in the Gulf of Guinea is quite smalled than in Eastern Africa, which makes pirates to be bolder and to attack larger ships.
