Scorpio Tankers Inc sold STI Diamond

   The worldwide provider of marine transportation of petroleum products Scorpio Tankers Inc sold the vessel STI Diamond, which was one of the smallest but most effective vessels of the company. The oil tanker was built in 2008 by Stx Offshore & Shipbuilding in their shipyard in Jinhae, South Korea. The cargo ship STI Diamond has length of 183.00 m, beam of 32.00 m and maximum draft of 10.90 m. The deadweight of STI Diamond is 51,246 DWT, while the gross tonnage is 29,955 GRT. The vessel was part from the fleet of Scorpio Tankers Inc till the year of building, but due to innovation of the fleet and the financial and debt crisis in the maritime transport, the company was urged to sell it to new shipowner. The company is planned to sell one more oil tanker - STI Coral till then end of September 2012.

Chemical tanker Amaranth got engine failure in the Bay of Biscay

   The chemical tanker Amaranth got blackout and full engine failure during the voyage from Safi, Morocco to Gdansk, Poland. The technical malfunction was the main reason for the blackout, which happened a few miles off the French coast in the Bay of Biscay. The ship agent requested support from the local port authorities and towing tug was sent to the scene of the blackout. The chemical tanker Amaranth was tugged and docked into the CIB Brest Shipyard, where the engine will be repaired. The vessel will have maintenance of the engine and replacement of the defected elements, which might cause delay into the ETA with a few days. After the repair the chemical tanker Amaranth will be fully inspected by the local authorities.

Barge ran aground in Danube river and blocked fairway of Regensburg

   The Danube river was temporary blocked, as the cargo self-propelled barge Sinn, ran aground on near Regensburg, Germany. The vessel was on route from Deggendorf to Passau, loaded with 613 tons of soy, when due to navigation mistake the pilot hit the left shore and the ship's bow stuck into the mud bank. From the speed the vessel Sinn gone perpendicular to the fairway, closing the route of the river. The stern also got aground into the right shore and the pilot was not able to re-float it in anyway. The operations around the accident were disturbed for more than 2 hours, before the harbor tugs arrive and re-float the cargo barge. The ship moved to the Muhlhamer Loop by own engine and was anchored there for inspection. After that the barge will continue its voyage to the destination point.

Bulk carrier Lucy Oldendorff caught fire in New Zaeland

   The bulk carrier Lucy Oldendorff reported fire into the cargo hold at berth place in Tauranga, New Zaeland. The vessel was moored into the port after voyage between Pasir Gudang, Malaysia and Tauranga, when the duty officers saw smoke coming from Cargo Hold No 1. The crew activated the CO2 firefighting system, which extinguished the fire, pushing the air from the hold. There is no damages and injured people during the accident and the discharging of the palm kernel cargo on board will continue according to the plan. There is no information about the reason for the accident, as the local and port authorities started investigations. The ship will be inspected after the finishing of the discharge operations and will continue the voyage. The vessel is quite new, built according to the latest standards of IMO with modern firefighting equipment, which was the main reason for fast and accurate extinguishing of the fire.

Passenger catamaran Baranof Winds with 72 passengers struck rocks in Alaska

   The passenger ship Baranof Winds struck rocks in Glacier Bay with 72 passengers on board. The sightseeing vessel got water ingress and was in danger of sinking, so the navigation officers sent immediately distress signal and requested assistance from coast guard and nearby vessels. On the scene of the accident arrived the Holland America cruise ship Volendam, which took 70 passengers from the sinking ship. Another two persons were boarded on National Park Service boat. Some the passengers were with minor injuries, but there is no problem for their health. The coast guard send a helicopter with de-watering pump, which was started on board of Baranof Winds. The crew and the coast guard rescuers operated the ship to stay afloat and deployed the anchor to keep the stability of the ship. The salvage operations of the passenger ship Baranof Winds will continue next hours and the vessel should be towed to the port of Sitka, Alaska. There is no information for poll…

Fire on board of chemical tanker Guyenne in Mediterranean sea

   Technical malfunction started fire in the engine room of the French chemical tanker Guyenne in Mediterranean sea. The accident happened on 18 nautical miles east off Palamos, Girona and only due to the fast reaction of the crew and the accurate firefighting the vessel was saved and there were no serious damages. The crew was able to extinguish the fire, but after that the engine did not started and the chemical tanker Guyenne was disabled drifting on 15 nautical miles off the shores. The ship's engine ordered tug service and the vessel was towed into the port of Marseille, where the repair of the main engine will be done. Also the local authorities were informed about the accident and requested full inspection of the vessel before returning to operation.

Vega Sagittarius container ship ran aground in Greenland

   The container ship Vega Sagittarius was hit by strong current and ran aground 12 nautical miles off Nuuk, Greenland. The cargo vessel was on route from Nuuk to Aasiaat, when the navigation officer was not correct enough with steering the course and missed the current near the island. The container ship hit the rocky bottom and got some damages above the waterline. The officers tried to maneuver for refloating the ship during the high water, but without any success, so it was necessarily to require assistance from the port authorities. The salvage operations of Vega Sagittarius are on way, but the tugs are waiting for the next high tide to perform refloating. The cargo ship was loaded with containers during the accident and the officers reported that there is no missing cargo and no damages of over it. The salvage can be done even with discharging some of the containers to lighten the vessel, before tugging.

The cargo vessel has capacity for 13,169 TEU and will be operated by the German company Hapag Lloyd. The vessel was built by the shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries in their shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. The container ship is really created according to the latest standards, using the most modern equipment and technology inside. Hamburg Express has overall length of 366.00 m, moulded beam of 48.00 m, height of 66.00 m and maximum draft of 15.50 m. The deadweight of the container ship is 127,170 DWT, the gross tonnage is 142,295 GRT and the net tonnage is 60,481 NT. The container ship has large size and large cargo capacity, which makes the ship more profitable and more flexible in operations. Bulk carrier Ocean Breeze ran aground in Chile

   The bulk carrier Ocean Breeze dragged anchor and went aground in a sandbank on the Llolleo Beach in Arica, Chile. The vessel arrived on the anchorage in front of the Chilean port, but because of the storm and heavy sea dragged the anchor to the beach. The bulk carrier Ocean Breeze hit the ground and was not able to re-float by itself. The coast guard helicopter saved the crew on board, as there was serious danger of overkeel of the ship. The bad weather and the heavy sea are causing serious interruptions of the shipping in the region, as there is no information to improve next 1-2 days. Before decreasing of the waves, there is no ability to salvage and refloat the bulk carrier. The ship Ocean Breeze is fully loaded with wheat and soy beans, so according to the salvage plans, the ship will be lightened before tugged back to deep waters. Second container ship of Bulgarian shipwoner Seaborne Trade was arrested

   The container ship "Sv. Georgy" (ex "Varna 5") was arrested in Istanbul, Turkey for unpaid expenses for fuel and supplies by the previous charterer. All the crew members were taken to the police station in Istanbul for interrogation, while the ship was detained into the Turkish port before clearing the situation. The official press release of the shipowner explained that the problem with the container ship "Sv. Georgy" is because of unpaid expenses of the previous charterer of the vessel and there is no connection with their operations. The container vessel is operated by the scandalous Bulgarian shipowner Seaborne Trade, which also owns the grievously known "Sv. Nikolay", arrested with 2.7 tones of cocaine on board in Cadiz, Spain a few days ago. The company was investigated for drug traffic from Latin America to Europe and connections with organized criminal groups.
